What a Cut-up

From the Daily News, December 12, 2012.

This is a story about artist Jayson Musson, a/k/a Hennessy Youngman. If you like art or hilarious things, I suggest you find out who Jayson Musson is. As Hennessy Youngman, he mocks the art world like, as he describes it, a Def Comedy comedian. He’s also been described as “Ali G with an MFA.” As Jayson Musson, he makes these super-cool collage paintings, cutting up Coogi sweaters (a/k/a Cosby sweaters) and piecing them back together. There’s a comment in there about black culture and the high art world, using a status symbol of one to create a complicated piece for the other, but they’re also just straight-up beautiful. If I had multiple thousands of dollars, I would buy one in a heartbeat.

What I didn’t include in the story: So Jayson is actually dating the sister of a very good friend of mine. I met him once before at his going away party in which the following conversation took place (after all of the whiskey):

Me: You’re totally famous.

Jayson: Oh, do you write about art?

Me: No, I just like to watch videos on the internet.

Then I walked away because I’m a class act.

Blonde ambition: Gallery owner Bridgette Mayer makes her mark on abstract art
From the Daily News, January 4, 2012.
Oh my god, this piece gave me agita for no real reason other than I’m crazypants but every time I got mega stressed, I would look at this insane Ryan McGinness piece. It’s six feet in diameter and glows in black light. It’s even better in person. If I had boatload of money to blow on a painting, I would buy this one, hang it up in my bedroom and stare at it all day long.

About

I'm a features reporter at the Philadelphia Daily News and sometimes I write TV reviews for the AV Club. I mainly think about TV, movies and Bruce Springsteen. Here's what I will do here: post my pieces, write in-depth analysis of minor sitcom characters and just generally show off my steez.

All views, even the most awesome, are my own.
