Look, I’m no huge Lady Gaga fan or anything but why is it that I’ve read a bunch of recent pieces (by dudes) complaining that she’s not pretty. Like this piece in last month’s Esquire by Stephen Marche, who I find intolerable but other people seem to enjoy:
For example: How has she become a sex symbol when she has no tits and no ass?
Then this tweet from a very nice...

2. There’ll no longer be a good excuse to cry in the middle of the afternoon. 7. Celebrities will have to write full memoirs to reveal traumatic childhood moments. 10. E!’s “The Soup” will lose one of its best clip sources.

– I really like the term Manxiety.
Where is Susan Faludi when you need her?!
Although, I gotta say the best quote about the male focal points of the new TV season came from Daily News TV critic Ellen Gray when we were making fun of how awful all the ABC upfront previews looked. She said, “It...

– I hate on Mary Elizabeth Williams sometimes because she tends to be shake-your-fist-angry at things that don’t really deserve anger, but this takedown of flash mobs and the desire to find fame via viral marketing is incredible.

The Natural: Late-bloomer actor Harry Philibosian... →
From the Daily News, Wed., May 17.
This is one of my favorite stories of my decidedly short career. It’s about this guy, Harry Philibosian, who was a dry cleaner until he was 57 and became a professional actor. I loved doing this story. He’s a truly fantastic guy.

– Roseanne Barr, from New York mag’s insanely good TV issue.
Part of the reason I like this piece is that she’s still so bitter. The lead paragraphs are a misnomer. This was a good piece, but it would have been a great piece if she had actually dissected what part of the fame monster...

Charlie Bucket looks like a child molester now, y/y? It makes more sense when you think about his all-too-close relationship with a man in skintight, striped pants.
I play this game where I like to see how many dishes I can fit in my dishwasher before the soap can’t reach the ones at the bottom. Conversely, I play another game where I see how long I can last without dishes. I am always winning.

Those Bosley hair transplant commercials would be more accurate if the pictures were labeled “Pre-” and “Post-midlife crisis.”
Also, here’s a letter I found from Kenny Rogers on the Bosley site … because this is what I do when I have writer’s block. Comments, mine.

Fake out: Twitter group writes the book on its... →
Ok, two best/worst parts about this story. First, this parenthetical:
(Lowery recently tweeted that he was sending out royalty checks for the Chiefs. Each was for a whopping $1.09.)
That was definitely a joke from “The Jerk” and not real. I suggested the correction end with “Reporter Molly Eichel feels like an idiot.” (See.)

Mind blowing Book of Art
I saw this in the current issue of Esquire (the one with Jeff Bridges on the cover) and couldn’t stop staring at it. This guy, Isaac G. Salazar, makes this crazy book art by folding down the pages in his free time. By day, he’s a goddamned accountant.
He has an Etsy shop, but everything has been sold out for awhile. His Facebook page says e-mail ikeroni@hotmail.com to get on the...
NPR, you goddamned sons of bitches
I’m writing a story about people who can’t see 3D movies (i.e. me) because of an astigmatism and the like. My editor told me she heard this NPR story about surgery that would allow people to see 3D movies without the glasses. So I went on the search for this story, thinking it would make the perfect kicker for me piece.
I found it.
It was definitely an April Fool’s joke.

For the Daily News, Mon., May 2, 2011
It was funny reporting this story about the bond a man forms with his daugthers through sports because I saw it from a different perspective: the relationship formed between my dad and my sister.
I told my dad he should write a memoir like this, over how he bonded with his two very different daughters. With Jodie, it would be about sports. With me it would...

They Ate What?: 'Swallow ...' tells story of a doc... →
My story about Mary Cappello’s book Swallow, Daily News, April 30, 2011.
Swallow is about the Foreign Objects Collection, a catalogue for items gethered by Dr. Chevalier Jackson of things people swallowed — from buttons to safety pins to a tiny pair of binoculars.
