Michael Musto was laid off from the Village Voice today.

When I was in college, I saw him and former Voice fashion writer Lynn Yeager at the K Mart on Astor Place. They both looked like the last remaining vestiges of the New York I came to experience and was sorely disappointed when it was replaced by a K Mart on Astor Place. He saw me, clearly, following them around the store and stopped and smiled and waved at me because he knew that it takes a special kind of weirdo to follow journalists around a K Mart. And Michael Musto is so great because he’s a weirdo too.

Everything I do is just a shade of what I read in him.

This business is a motherfucker.

Call I received today that I honestly can't tell is an insult or not

 • Caller: Yesterday in your column, you referred to someone named Schoolly D as looking 'quite fly.' What does that mean?
 • Me: It means that he was looking looking cool.
 • Caller: Is that a new term?
 • Me: It's been around for a bit.
 • Caller: It's not quite Gatsby though, is it? <hangs up>

Jim Gardner reveals his tweet side
From the Daily News, April 28, 2013.
I’ve been bad about posting clips here mainly because I write four times a week now and I don’t think the majority of those clips are worthy of posterity. But this story is.
In 37 years of holding down the anchor desk, Jim Gardner has done something like three interviews. I got number four. This was a very, very big deal for me and my new precarious position as a gossip columnist, even though this wasn’t gossip. Gardner was supposed to give me 15 minutes, he gave me an hour. I’ve been watching Jim Gardner since I was a little kid, and all I wanted to do was tell him about all those times when I was too small to stay up by myself and my parents would tell me I could watch the first half of whatever 10 p.m. drama they were into. The best days were when they would fall asleep and I could watch the full episode of “NYPD Blue,” sitting on the floor of their bedroom. And how at 11, I would switch to WPVI (we were a WPVI family, to the point where we referred to the TV station by its call letters, rather than, say, ABC) and watch Jim Gardner read the news before one of them would wake up and tell me to go to sleep.
I did, on the other hand, tell him that I know all the words to the Action News theme song. But I did not sing it.
Anyway, I’m proud of this one and it’s been a little while since I’ve been proud. It felt good again for the first time in a long time.

I did, on the other hand, tell him that I know all the words to theĀ Action News theme song. But I did not sing it.

Anyway, I’m proud of this one and it’s been a little while since I’ve been proud. It felt good again for the first time in a long time.

Oh, thanks for that comment, MIDDLE SCHOOL GYM TEACHER.
(To be fair, he was probably commenting on how often I am on the radio, rather than my promiscuity when it comes to professional basketball teams but … I mean, look at the hashtag.)

About

I'm a features reporter at the Philadelphia Daily News and sometimes I write TV reviews for the AV Club. I mainly think about TV, movies and Bruce Springsteen. Here's what I will do here: post my pieces, write in-depth analysis of minor sitcom characters and just generally show off my steez.

All views, even the most awesome, are my own.
